This is one of the palaces of power in Lucca, the great palace of the Trenta family built at the peak of their eminence and wealth. In 1412, Lorenzo Trenta began to acquire the property, at the same time hiring Jacopo della Quercia to work on the Trenta chapel in San Frediano. The palace was probably completed by Lorenzo's heirs towards the mid-1400s. It established a new building style in Lucca, the first definitive alternative to the style of the Trecento (1300); instead of brick, it had a stone cladding, and replaced bifora windows with large and closely spaced rectangular windows. The great stone portal opened for carriages in an internal courtyard.
The family coat of arms still adorns the facade. It is said that Charles VIII of France stayed there briefly in 1494, while passing through on his journey to claim the throne of Naples, thus beginning his ascent.
